Re: Rowing at (and beyond) the limit

I watched the video as well, and, well, I seem to have a lot of thoughts. 1. I was taught that the cox has overall responsibility for the boat and the crew. I feel like it was reckless and stupid for both the german and Dutch coxes to continue racing with an athlete in their boats either unconscious...

Re: Heart Rate Training and Bands

The blip in the first is most likely caused by inadequate warmup. If you dive into the 5k pace without enough warmup, your major muscles aren’t fully purfused with blood. The blood vessels dialate over about a 10 to 20 minute period. Since, the blood flow is constricted, the muscles use the oxygen i...

Re: Heart Rate Training and Bands

Quick suggestion: If you are manually renaming workouts that have been imported. I suggest you put a keyword in the title, like "mainset". Then you can used the filter function in the workout view to justy view the workouts you want.

Re: Heart Rate Training and Bands

Hi, I'll do some thinking about how to prevent reimporting deleted workouts. As for the comparison plot performance, that looks like it might be a bug. I use painsled instead of ergdata for a number of reasons, but mainly because the ergdata export doesn't send along the advanced metrics like stroke...

Hi max, I’ve been a Rowsandall user from the beginning, I can help you out if you want to try it. Hi Greg, I have a couple of questions I hope you can help with. 1. How do you delete workouts eg warm ups, setting drag factor etc. I can delete them but they always reappear the next day. 2. Can I cha...

Re: Leg strengthening exercise to get into a scull

I totally agree. One subtle point, I have tended to do more front squatting over the past year. It limits the total load, but it forces me to maintain much better posture. I think it's a lower risk exercise.

I’ve been a Rowsandall user from the beginning, I can help you out if you want to try it.

There’s a getting started article on the blog associated with the site that I hope is helpful.

Bored? Another online erg challenge series!

The fine folks at rowsandall.com have come up with a challenge series for the indoor season. This series is perfect for folks that are using ergdata, boatcoach, or painsled when they erg, because you can post your results automatically, and also check out how other racers approached the race in term...

Re: Height / Weight and 2k performance

Here's the analysis... https://analytics.rowsandall.com/2018/12/08/why-are-rowers-tall/ Two conclusions: 1. The trend is clear that taller rowers are faster, a rule of thumb is a second off the split for every inch of height for men, closer to 1/2 sec for women. 2. There is huge variation from perso...

I took a quick look at the results so far. I have about 150 responses. Here's a quick plot of the 2k times versus height for just the male rowers. https://quantifiedrowing.files.wordpress.com/2018/12/foo.png Here it is for female rowers https://quantifiedrowing.files.wordpress.com/2018/12/foo1.png I...

Re: Height / Weight and 2k performance

So far, I have 68 results. I appreciate the ideas for additional questions. I agree that this is a crude first step. I'll continue with refinements onc I get a first cut at the data. The biggest thing I want to see is the slope of the relationship between height and performance.

Height / Weight and 2k performance

Hi, Rowers often talk about the relationship between age, weight, height and rowing performance. Last winter I did an extensive analysis of how age effected rowing performance, but there is very little data on how weight and height effect things. I would like to ask a favor of all you rowers out the...

Re: Does your drive length vary with stroke rate?

Hi, Here is what my drive length looks like versus stroke rate. Stroke rate is along the x-axis and drive length is on the y axis. I was rowing a rate ladder with - 5' at 20 - 4' @ 22 - 3' @ 24 - 2' @ 26 - 1' @ >28 I was rowing this on slides. https://quantifiedrowing.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/dri...

Re: The Lexicon of Indoor Rowing Terminology

I'm not plummy, but I can explain OCD. It stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. As applied to rowing, it is trying to hit times , rates and distances exactly throughout a row. An example. If you were doing an 8x500 interval session, you might attempt to hit 1:50.0 for every single rep at a rate ...

Re: Heart Rate Danger?

I went through the recommendations from the AMA and the heart association. I could find no reference in the document for where the 85% upper limit came from. Basically, it is part of the overall recommendation that people should try to get at least 5 x 30' of activity a week and at least 3 of those ...

Re: Lactate based training

I'm getting back into the mysteries of lactate based training. Today, I wanted to do an experiment on myself. My step test and my prior aerobic workouts indicated that a training power between 180 and 185W would probably about right. What does "about right" mean? That means that they would...

Re: Lactate based training

The same principles apply to both. The most significant difference in my mind is that since rowing is a non-impact sport, you can sustain higher volumes of low intensity training with lower chance of injury. I've heard Zone X called "Black Hole Training", I think by Joe Friel. That's the b...
