Re: Cycle cross-training

It looks like we could have a nice little contingent of cyclists come the warmer months :D . I was let down by tradesmen today after arranging a day off work so thought i might aswell get out for a decent ride before the missus found me something to do :- http://app.strava.com/activities/39357557 Ju...

Re: Cycle cross-training

Just a quick one for me today, dry but very cold and windy but thought i'd man-up and get away from the turbo. Managed to drag myself into the 21st Century and get Strava enabled :- http://app.strava.com/activities/38104780 Just 37.5k @ circa 27kph, outward bound was into a strong headwind so made t...

Re: Cycle cross-training

Much respect for cycling onthose icey roads Huw, rather you than me !! The Furness Peninsula seems to have escaped the worst of the weather (famous last words!!) with only the hills and backroads ice/snow bound, main roads pretty much clear so decided to have a quick spin out today as you never know...

Re: Cycle cross-training

Nicely done Huw, 18.6mph can’t be sniffed at !! Another short 2hr ride for me on Saturday, same route as last week but with an added 5 mile local loop at the end to get a few more miles in. Would call this a steady UT1’ish session interspersed with some AN intervals on the hills!! Don’t know about y...

Re: Cycle cross-training

That looks like a nice run out Huw :D . First outdoor ride of the year for me on Saturday, a bit time crunched due to inclement weather forecast so thought I’d do a hilly route so as to get maximum benefit of the session. 30 miles @ 15pmh, 2550 ft of ascent (85ft per mile) so pretty lumpy. Pace wasn...

Re: Cycle cross-training

A very rare weekday outdoor ride for me today and decided to do a 50 mile loop around Coniston Water from Barrow which is a fairly flattish course for the Lake District. Didn't eally have a target time in mind just wanted to try and get home within 3 hours. The ride itself was pretty unspectacular, ...

Re: Cycle cross-training

Thanks Huw :D Lesson for today......NEVER trust the BBC Online Weather, forecast for this afternoon, bright sunshine with light breeze, actual for this afternoon frequent hail showers (golf ball size) interspersed with heavy rain and a stiff wind #-o !! Decided to stick to main roads to avoid the fi...

Re: Cycle cross-training

Trish - thats one heck of a ride especially on a static bike and the pace.... ^O^ ^O^ . I feel quite inadequate after reading your tale... Had a couple of days off with it being half term so despite poor weather conditions i've managed some outdoor mileage for a change, turbo's are ok but th...

Re: Cycle cross-training

Mat – welcome to the wonderful world of cycling, addictive isn’t it !! Re your question on gears I’d echo both Mike and Colin’s advice, ease the pressure on the cranks when you are changing gear, I’d also check the indexing of the gears, especially if the bike hasn’t had a service yet. Gear cables t...

Re: Cycle cross-training

That looks like an interesting and varied session Huw. Nice walk and ride Jonathon First outdoor ride in two weeks for me last Saturday, shocking weather in the North West has relegated me to the turbo so a relatively dry day enabled to sneak out for a couple of hours. I managed a fairly hilly 36.5m...

Re: Cycle cross-training

That looks like a very nice ride Huw but that hill just after 40 miles looks pretty brutal  . First ride on the road for a week although 4 turbo sessions have kept me active during the dark nights. Today I was a bit time crunched but managed to sneak a very hilly 40 miles in @ 16.1 mph and a ...

Re: Cycle cross-training

After not managing to get out the road since last Sunday I was glad to get away from the turbo trainer and put a few miles in today. Didn't really have a route in mind but deliberately chose the hillier side of my area and explored some of the back roads of the Southern tip of the Lake District. Des...

Re: Cycle cross-training

Huw & Paul – thanks for the advice, very much appreciated. I think I’ll look into the 28 sprocket in the coming weeks, hopefully just as a safety net. I’ve no intention of finding anything greater than 15% at the moment, gaining fitness and confidence on the lower gradiant stuff is my immediate ...

Re: Cycle cross-training

Any chance of another interloper joining this merry bunch :D ? I’ve had my road bike for about 3 months now and have to admit that I’ve made a massive mistake…..I should have bought one years ago  . After years of being stuck on the erg, spin bike and treadmill in sweaty, soul-less gyms I’ve re...

Sorry to let you down Al but I’m having a self imposed break from the erg , overuse injuries catching up with me again. Decided to focus on the the spin bike for a while so as not to lose my aerobic base and I’m just about to order a road bike to get me out and about for the summer…..Huw, Paul G and...

Re: March CTC

I had sneaky attempt at this last night, my training has been sporadic to say the least and I’m nowhere near any sort of pb form in any distance. What training I have done has been R20-22 anyway so thought this would fit in nicely, pace wise I didn’t have a clue so used a recent sub-maximal 30R20 (1...

Re: what training have free spirits been doing today?

First erg session in approx 10 weeks for me last night, 2*18 UT1 with a HR cap of 160 :-

2:03.0 @ 18
2:03.4 @ 18

Not quite as bad as expected, I’ve spent the last 10 weeks or so on the spin bike so general fitness isn’t too bad but a long way to go to getting erg fitness back  .

I’m currently well and truly hacked off (substitute stronger profanity of your choice to get the full effect!!), late September and October has been a disaster for me with a hamstring / hip problem that I just can’t seem to shake off. I’ve spent the time in the gym on the bike and the stairmaster, a...

After a couple of self enforced days off the erg with a dodgy hamstring I thought i'd put a toe in the water with a 40' L4 :- 2k wu 40' - 17.8 (176,180,180,176) +77 2445 (+20) 2459 (+17) 2462 (+20) 2445 (+20) 2.5k cd Overall pretty happy with that, at least the overages were consistent  .
