Web site problems :(

Where should the web site go - what should we do? Who has the time between rows?

Thomas,
same issue here: Firefox 3.0.10 on Windows XP - both reply and new topic button are only partially visible. Since I barely can turn on my computer, I have no idea what to do about it!

I'm currently unable to log on to Free Spirits from my home PC.

When i go onto the site, it gives me an opportunity to log on and accepts my password, but then immediately logs me off again.

Has anyone ever run into this problem and/or does anyone have a solution?

Regards
Paul

Try a different web browser on the same machine. If that works then it is a cookie issue. You can then fix it by deleting all your Free Spirits cookies. Good luck.

Thanks Thomas.

Unfortunately, I already tried that. I have the same problem with both IE and Firefox. Free Spirits is the only site where I have this problem - I can still access C2 via the link and log in my meters (on the rare occasions I manage to hop on the erg).

I think it's part of an overall issue with my PC - the performance has been getting gradually worse in recent weeks and I think I must have some sort of virus. I've bought an external hard drive and I'm planning to transfer all my files to it and buy a new PC. In the meantime, I have a laptop at home that I can use.

Thanks again

Paul

I think i have the right total meters but that one day is still showing a negative meter distance while the next appears to have it added back in. Is this the fix?

No Steve, the metre problem was due to C2 losing the data. You need to reenter the lost metres (Saturday and Sunday were lost)

If you re entered the deducted metres on the same day then the board will look normal. If, however, you waited until the next day, the negative number will remain but the total number will be correct.
If I'm right then you actually rowed 6,909m on 15th and updated the MB on that day. You were credited with 15,958m which is just giving you back the 9,049m that appear as -9,049m on 14th. Same total metres but wrong dates.
The MB allocates all of the metres that you enter to the day of the entry, not the day that they were rowed, even if you load them via a logcard and the C2 logcard utility program.

Hope that makes sense......and that I'm right

I reentered meters on Friday (12th), Sat (13th) and still the negative Sunday (14th) meters are showing. So I went in and entered zero meters on Sunday and it still is showing negative meters on the 14th, Sunday. I also have gone in and removed all cookies for Freespirits and the negative meters are still showing.

Sorry I am so dense.

Edit: I went and deleted everything back to the 11th and am going to let the meter board update to see what this give me. Hopefully a clean slate and then re-enter up to today.

So if I am understanding it correctly the meter board database in completely independent of the C2 database in terms of history. The meter board database only collects new entries as they are entered as stores them without looking back in the C2 history itself as I assumed it would do. The meter database also must look at the daily total meters against a running C2 database total to set the negative meters that I see now. It has now wiped out all meters for this week.

It would appear that to correct the mess that I have created by not understanding how things worked and make it look right I need to refrain form entering any new meters for about a week and do a meter dump on a single day after the board has cleared for my listing.

This is how I think that the Meter Board works Steve. But I could well be wrong!

The MB has an internal record of each of our season metres to date. It accesses the C2 logbook every hour and extracts the total season metres for each of us. It subtracts the MB distance from the C2LB distance to derive what needs to be added to the MB record. This result is stored in a buffer and displayed as "today's" metre count. At the end of each day whatever is in the buffer is added to the MB total and the day rolls over to the next date. The buffer is now displayed as "yesterday's" distance and reset to zero.
Only the total number of season metres and the current day's entry ever change on the MB. All historical data are fixed.

Hence, when the C2LB data got wiped, the MB will have entered a negative value for the metres rowed for anyone who had rowed in the previous couple of days as the MB total will have been larger than the C2LB one. Just re entering the missing rowed metres will sort out the totals but the board just won't look right because the negative numbers in the historical data simply won't change.

That's the way I read it Doc. I rowed 15928 one day, the following day it showed -15928 so I simply re entered 15928 the following day and the total was correct although the "look" of the board was incorrect. This is the same as people adding say a month's worth of rows all in one hit and it showing say 250k+ in one day on the metreboard - it's just an accumulation of smaller totals lumped together.

No need to wait Steve. Just re enter all of the metres that you have deleted any time that suits you. Some time during the subsequent hour the MB total will be correct, although you're stuck with those negative numbers forever I'm afraid.

The problem seems to have resolved itself spontaneously. Go figure.

Is it just me, or has the meter board (and website in general) gotten somewhat flaky? I frequently "Failed to load the page" or "Can't find the server" errors. I've tried deleting cookies, emptying cache, switching browsers, etc. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not. The meter board used to work for me every time, even if it was slow loading sometimes. Is it just me? Or are others seeing similar behavior? Thanks!

I haven't seen any problems with the website in general but the MB hasn't been quite right for a while now. You can no longer see the logbooks of the other FS, see SB's or compare times.
I think that JL has been contacted about it but he's a ridiculously busy man by all accounts. I expect that it'll get resolved in time.

I guess it's the begin of the season - MB has not updated a whole bunch of rows!? Let's see what tomorrow brings.

I think that JL used to spend a fair bit of time optimising the meterboard but work has got in the way. It runs on a UNIX machine in his basement but not sure if that would have a bearing on its reliability.
