Re: Name that tune
Not exactly - but a healthy guess. I was checking in to see if I needed to ad another line - so here goes...
Count the headlights on the highway

OK - thought this might go very quickly with a couple of the whizzkids on here but alas not. So, additional clues to narrow it down:
Very early 70's
UK artist (still performing)

Elton John? Not a clue what song it is though. It's not Rocket Man, Your Song, Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me, Candle In The Wind, Crocodile Rock, Daniel, etc. etc.

Re: Name that tune
I am not sure that adding the line before that one is going to help, (it is "Ya know my heart keeps tellin' me,
'You're not a kid at thirty-three'") so here are some more lines:
"I got my pills to ease the pain
Can't find a thing to ease the rain"

Re: Name that tune
No responses!
It looks as if Everybody's goin' away
Said they're movin' to LA
There's not a soul I know around
Everybody's leavin' town
Some caught a freight, some caught a plane
Find the sunshine, leave the rain
They said this town's a waste of time
I guess they're right, it's wastin' mine
Some gotta win, some gotta lose
I just felt that that fit, even though I do not have much hope that it will jog anybody's memory.
The song was apparently written and recorded by Danny O'Keefe in the early 1970's, but I did not know that until I looked it up.
It was covered by various artists, including Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Charlie McCoy, Waylon Jennings, Dwight Yoakam, Charlie Rich, Conway Twitty, Leon Russell, B.J. Thomas, The Bards, Mike Farris, Chris Hillman, Earl Kluge, Rita Wilson, Jerry Lee Lewis and Leon Russell, Holly Cole, Harry Manx, Mel Tormé, Nat Stuckey, Marco T, Shooter Jennings, and Gösta Linderholm (1973) with Swedish lyrics.
I do not know some of those singers, but maybe someone does.

I've no idea Peter. But I can feel your frustration. I have a film posted that I was sure people would know. But I guess not.

Re: Name that tune
Peter, I posted lyrics from a song called Galway Girl a while back. It's so well known in Ireland that I figured it would be guessed fairly quickly. But I eventually realised that nobody on here knew anything about the song.
I think your song may fall into the same category.

He is massive in Nashville - if I can misquote the Blues Brothers - he plays both types of music - Country AND Western.

Re: Name that tune
Thanks guys, I was starting to think no one was out there.
The song was Good Time Charlie Got The Blues.
Danny O"Keefe https://youtu.be/-YP3pIPp8P8
Leon Russell https://youtu.be/apal3VnZpPo
I believe this next song charted in the UK and USA, as well as elsewhere.
"Virgil, quick, come see, there goes Robert E Lee"

Re: Name that tune
Of course - I'd forgotten it was a cover. It's just the version that sprang immediately to mind. I was going to go for another song that was originally recorded by a band, but is now better remembered for the version done by a female singer. But Proud Mary was asked about a year ago....
So here's something completely different:
