A gentle 3k yesterday.

My first training since before Christmas.

I got a nasty virus, which turned into a chest/lung infection and hung about for most of January. Thought the cough would never go.

Finally feeling strong again, so trying to get back into rowing.

What's the news?

Good to be back, and very glad you're still here.

Where else would I go to talk about erging pain?

Are you doing any interval work Felton?

I'm focusing a bit on 5k type stuff mainly due to this months CTC but basically striving to be a jack-of-all-trades/master of none. Did this so far this week:

15x500 - r1:30 - 5k'ish rate/pace - 28@1:44.7
10x250 - r1:00 - 1k'ish rate/pace - 36@1:32.7
3x4000 - r2:00 - recovery/endurance - 20@1:59.2

Still deciding on what to do today. Maybe a Pete Plan endurance interval. Waterfall comes to mind as I always hated that session.

Dan, those look like pretty decent sessions, looking forward to seeing your proper CTC effort. Haven't been doing any structured training recently due to lack of time, just been jumping on and doing whatever I fancy that day and enjoying getting back some fitness. Should have some more time to train in the next few months so will do pete plan/sam plan.

what training have free spirits been doing today?

Post by danfennell »

CTC result will largely depend on how much discomfort I'm willing to withstand.

Not enough time for waterfall this afternoon and didn't want to row after dinner so chose this.Took a look back in my training diary and found I did this workout on 3/20/2015. Avg then was similar - 1:40.8 - but EHR's were much higher. 172-176-179-180-182 Ouch!!! That must have been a fun one.

That was the start of my run up to lots of PB's in the late summer and fall. May try to follow/match the basic trajectory but be much more sensible when it comes to rest, recovery and heeding the warning signs I previously ignored.

Thought I'd chuck a post on here as I was happy (and sad) at the same time with my result last night. Couldn't think of anything else to do so went for an hour fearing that I would bail part way through as Sunday I kind of rowed myself to a standstill and was shattered all day after.
Actually held a decent pace through the first 35 minutes and was seeing 14500~14600 as my estimated finish distance - but couldn't remember what my SB was (thinking either 14602 or 14620 - something 146..with a "2" in it). From 20 minutes to the end was pure mind games to get it done and was still thinking of backing off with 2 minutes to go!
With a 20s "sprint" at the end I'd managed 14643 - thinking "hooray!" only to find my SB was 14682!!! :(

Shattered all evening but felt surprisingly ok all day today. Ah well, at least I was back in the ball park :D

I did my first session of the season today. Only 2k, with no warm up or cool down, but just glad to be back in the saddle I'll see how my back is tomorrow before doing anything more.

For the record, I managed to creep under 8 minutes (just barely - 7:59.7) thanks to a sprint finish. I might enter nonathlon scores for the 500, 1k and 2 k just to get my name on the board.

Good to see you back Paul.

Have you ever actually managed to row without setting yourself a target? I can just imagine "Right, just a steady 2K to see how the back is" moving to "Right, last minute sprint should get me below 8 minutes, and bugger the back!"

Today I did my first ever FM in 3h 23min 23s just below 2:25 pace with some minor breaks in between. Thanks to RowPro I did not need to press buttons in the breaks to keep the PM alive :-)
Was motivated by several things to give the FM a try:
1) had done a HM every Saturday for 3 weeks so wanted to have another one or more :-)
2) at work we are a team of 7 that need collectively to reach 100.000 steps today for the Global Health Challenge by Virgin. I have to admit I am not a fan of the GHC as it only converts biking and swimming into steps. For rowing they advice to attach the step tracker to the wrist, which I consider a joke/insult for a guy like me rowing at 24spm with a pace between 1:50 and 2:30, unless doing C2CTC ;-)
So I googled a bit and found a university that conversion tables. There the rowing machine gets 212 steps per Minute if you do not wear the tracker. So with the FM I made already around 43000 steps :-) :-)
3) another motivation as always is the Meterboard and the chance to pass Richard for a day, BUT saw that he had rowed as well today ;-)

Well done Tako. =D> =D> =D> The first FM is always a step into the unknown and is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. The next one will be a LOT easier. :^o

He he, let's see. Not feeling an urge to try again in the near future.
Using RowPro I had three pace boats "chasing/helping" me.
2:40 the slowest pace I could see OK
2:30 the pace I think I should be able to
2:25 to push myself, and it helped as I chased it down after each break, helping with mental focus :-)

Wow Tako, I like how you approached that! My FM #2 several months ago was supposed to be online with a couple ladies but my connection dropped. Would have been better to set up the pace boats! I did watch movies, which helped.

Similarly.. I am doing a steps challenge for work... it is day 3 of 28 and my team has to get minimum 6,000 steps/day. I'm trying for 10,000.

Erging and even rowing OTW is not helpful because Fitbit gives relatively few steps for rowing. I did a 15 min easy run and logged as many steps as my 45 min sweaty workout in the boat yesterday  I do wear the tracker on my wrist but find I get more steps (rowing only) if I tuck it under my shorts above my knee. TMI?

Interesting to hear the conversion you found. Not scientific but estimating from what I've been seeing on my fitbit, 212/min seems too high for the rowing, if I think about my personal relative exertion. But for a marathon, yep I'd take the advice of the experts!

Ps Don't forget concept 2 will send you a marathon pin once a year, all you need is to request it from challenges & ensure there's an address in your profile. (If that's only a US thing, forgive me). It sounds silly, but I LOVE getting that little prize in the mail!

Well done to Tako for the FM - the only distance I haven't done mostly because it is a mental challenge as much as a physical one but he has made me think about fitting one in this season. Part of the battle is to simply make the decision to do it. Most of what I do is (very) loosely based on the Pete Plan with a mix of workouts albeit with more rest days than the 1 per week he sets out. I am always full of admiration for anyone clocking up metres as well as having a full time job. Jill and I have the advantage of being retired although with everything else going on, our time is at a premium not to mention two people sharing one erg ......... (not at the same time!)

Once again - congrats. to Tako and thanks as well for making me think about FM motivation.

Regards,

Richard Underwood

I thought I'd break my FM duck today. Arrived at the gym with a couple of iplayer downloads on my phone, fully charged headphones and lots of drinks. Turned out, not enough of the latter.

No kidding on the mental challenge to this. Started out steady and thought I could hold r25 / 2.16 for the duration. Got to the halfway point in reasonable shape (nothing too square), but it all got out of shape after 2 hours. It became a matter of taking 30 minutes at a time, finding distractions......

Finished on a little under 3hr 20mins and have an even greater appreciation for those who do this regularly.
