Nice one PeterGrobi wrote: βFri May 18, 2018 8:01 amAhem, you did know that I couldn't leave this unreplied, didn't you? Although I have to say that yours was a very fine effort and it took me several tries before I could answer it properly which happened last night:
image-2018-05-18.jpg
It was a fine balance in the first rep between overdoing it and keeping my powder dry for the second rep. I managed to be a tad quicker in rep #1 but that wasn't enough to beat Steve's time. So I had to be significantly faster in the second rep which I managed, but it was tough. Anyway, over to you Steve
I've been a bit lax for a week or so, so will probably struggle to match that now. But I'll try ...

Re: May ctc - 1k / 3'r / 992m, standing starts
I definitely wanted to row this one today though I'm not quite fit after a pub-visit last night. The plan was a 1:50 pace, ended out to be 1:49 for the first one and 1:47 for the second one thanks to the last 300 meters or so. There's room for improvement, let's see whether I can get past Steve and Peter...
My time now is 7:10.2

Great competition this month
The Pete Plan is leaving me a little heavy legged but managed to pace today's effort sensibly. No fast start and nothing left for a sprint finish at the end. Pleased to scrape under 6:45 but not convinced it will be good enough for boat 2.
1000m 3:23.8 @1:41.9
992m 3:20.6 @1:41.1
1992m 6:44.4 @1.41.5

Re: May ctc - 1k / 3'r / 992m, standing starts
Morning Peter
Not sure where this came from, I guess the relatively short distance gives me the chance to utilise the height and weight advantage without running out of the small level of overall fitness!
I had to target 1:46.0 to be sure to get in front again. Took me a couple of attempts, and without the target would never of happened.
Plan was to get to 500 on the 2nd leg at target, and see what was left.
1st attempt on Tue I HD with 300 to go. But that was ok as I'd passed the initial 500 mark.
2nd attempt Wed.
1k - 3:31.4 / 1:45.7 / 31 - slightly quicker than planned, and gasping
992 - 3:28.5 / 1:45.0 / 32 - used the quick first 10 stroke policy to get ahead of target. Still ahead with 500 to go. Now getting very hard work with 300 to go, but being ahead of target meant I could finish and see what score came in. It was then just a matter of counting down. 10 hard strokes at 250, then cling on to the end.
The time of 6:59.9 came up and I found myself smiling, would have felt totally different even if it had been 0.2s slower. Oh those damn numbers.
That's me done Peter, so you have a week... and Fred, or the Paul's?
Well done to Erik for popping his time in.

Congratulations on going sub7 for the ctc Steve, very well done and well deserved What a difference 0.2 seconds can make Thanks for the lively description, I was with you all the way down to those final 250m in the second leg. Now I have to have another go, thanks for setting a proper target

Yes, very well done, Steve . Very satisfying to go sub 7 indeed.
I think I'll have another go this weekend, but the weather is going to be quite warm, that's gonna be difficult I'm afraid.

I tried again this morning, but I only achieved scaring the cat with some fruity language when I caved in with 200m to go. Your seat is safe from me Plummy - a fantastic row

Re: May ctc - 1k / 3'r / 992m, standing starts
Some very entertaining battles going on this month, Dave vs. Ian, Take vs. Felton and Steve (and Fred) vs. me. Steve had set a great target in going sub7 and I wasnβt sure at all if I would be able to beat that. I tried yesterday but blew up in the first leg with 280m to go and in the second leg with 260m to go. Nevertheless I felt fit enough today to have a go again:
All I can say is it HURT! First rep was already tough and I would have been ok with handling down with letβs say 200 to go (so a bit better than yesterday) and try again on Monday. But having come so far it would be a waste to h/d after investing so much energy and I would have to go through all that pain AGAIN So I desperately tried to keep going and finish rep #1. Of course three minutes break felt too short but knowing I was 0.5 seconds ahead of Steve at that point gave me enough motivation for rep #2. First 500m went ok here but then the trouble started. I really had to concentrate on breathing, technique and focussing the PM (thus not thinking of the pain developing) to get me through the next 300m. Once I was there and the remaining meters switched to 199m it was easier mentally. Ten big ones to get below 100 to go, another ten big ones, still not home, three more, done!
Absolutely knackered now but happy with the result Over to Fred and Steve (if he wants to try again). Anyone seen Paul Gould recently?

Re: May ctc - 1k / 3'r / 992m, standing starts
Very very good, Peter
I just came home from work and am wondering whether I'll give it a try in just a moment. It's a bit hot in the study where my C2 is located so it's not very tempting but I feel I have to give it a try. And probably some more before the month is over, it's a tough time to beat.
Have a nice weekend, all, with some easy rowing going on perhaps?
No idea where Paul Gould is at the moment.

Paul has been posting meters daily on the meterboard, so he is probably planning a secret last minute post for the C2CTC

Re: May ctc - 1k / 3'r / 992m, standing starts
It's great to see people helping each other to improve their times
Today I had JonT to thank for finishing my CTC attempt (thanks Jon )
My best 1k time from last year was at 1:52.9 pace, so I was aiming for something around 1:54 for this one (total time of 7:34).
Things seemed to go well in the first rep (where have I heard that before ), I finished that in a 1:53.1 pace but was well out of breath. After the 3 minute break I was feeling a bit better and tried to keep to a 1:54 pace for the second rep. However after about 400m it all became too hard and I slowed down drastically. Only the thought that I might still beat JonT's time convinced me to pick the pace back up, and I managed to do the last 500m at my target pace. Overall the pace for the second rep was 1:56.7 - and I was completely worn out.
A total time of 7:38.0 is not too bad, and it gets me in boat 3 for now. I might be able to go a bit faster by pacing the first rep better.

Unusual for me to do a CTC but whoever said pacing is the key was absolutely spot on. My excuse is I started wheezing in the 992 segment which has never happened before so I faded quite badly - hopefully it is hay fever or a summer cold rather than old age ........

well done Peter, knew it was in you, but it still had to be done
I've got a holiday weekend and work travel next week, so I don't think I can have another go (thankfully).
Fred, pretty sure you can do this too ...
Well done to Plummy for the 0.1 and to Jan. Its true that its the personal targets that keep us going

Excellent rowing both
Richard, I'm afraid there's only one remedy, and that's to try again taking it a bit easier in the first rep.
That's what I'm planning to do as well ... Definitely need to do more interval/sprint training this year
