December ctc - The french kiss #2 (1'/2'/3'/1'/2'/3' - 9'r total)

Post by Grobi »

Hi all,

FIRT (french indoor rowers team) have announced the December ctc:

"Row the following reps:
One minute, two minutes, three minutes,
one minute, two minutes, three minutes
with a maximum of nine minutes resting, spread any way you like.
First rep from a standing start, the other reps from a standing or rolling start (your choice).
Record your total distance for twelve minutes not including the nine minutes rest"

Some of you might remember this one. It was the ctc in May 2014, hence the nr. 2.

Should be an interesting one to pace. As a first guideline I'd look at the pacing pattern from May 2014. Problem is to figure out if you're still at the same fitness like you were then😃
Athletes row, others just play games

For everyone trying to figure out how to best use the 9 minutes of rest, here's what this forum made of that three and a half years ago:

I see that I went for 1' followed by 4 x 2' rest periods. I also tied up somewhat in the final interval, but still managed 3483m at 1:43.4 pace, which is way, way faster than anything I could do right now. I did a 2k at 1:44.6 pace a few days later, so I guess 2k - 1 is possibly a good guide as to pacing for this challenge.

Philip since it's just us in boat 1 for now let's break out the champagne and red velvet cake. \:D/

Tried this one early and... what do you know... beat my time from 2014 by 13 meters.

Rests were 1, 2, 2:30, 1:30, 2:00. Overall pace 1:55.9, 3105m

After 4 half marathons in 7 days I really wanted to give my legs a rest - but succumbed to the "must row because it's Sunday" demons. So, given I wasn't doing another HM I decided to do both the CTC and IRL on shredded legs (not my brightest decision)...
For the CTC - managed 3274m
1 min - 274m - legs felt like lead lumps
2 min - 548m - rolling start helped
3 min - 821m - felt like 10 minutes
1 min - 281m - it's only a minute, how much can it hurt? (lots it seems)
2 min - 542m (dying now)
3 min - 807m (dead)

Then for a "cool down" put a marker for the IRL (5km this month) - 20:34.3 (which also got me above 100km for the Holiday Challenge :-) )

My legs are not my friends right now...

Dave, you did well being 1.8 seconds slower pacewise than in May 2014 on "shredded legs". As soon as you do it again on fresh legs I'm sure you'll beat your 2014 result.

And thanks for putting in an early marker for the IRL :fswink:

Thats an amazing row on "fried" legs Dave-well done =D>

I prefer fried eggs myself !

I did this yesterday in the gym and completely overcooked it at the start-having a target of 1:48 in my head

My rests were 1'/2'/2'/1'/3'

12'-3275-1:49.9-36

1'-279-1:47.5-32
2'-555-148.1-34
3'-822-1:49.4-36
1'-276-1:48.6-39
2'-534-1:52.3-39-legs have gone
3'-809-1:51.2-40-3' rest helped here a bit otherwise it could have been a lot worse!

It was as painful as it looks

Remarkably close to my distances Alan!! The first minute lulls you into a false sense of security doesn't it - then bites back very quickly.

Well done Alan and Dave =D> =D>
This one is quite tough.

Had my first attempt today - thought I would set out at 1:45's and see how far I could get before blowing up.
Set the DF at 202 and set off - went a bit better than I expected - the last 3 minutes that I had been dreading weren't that bad after all.

My rests were 1'/2'/1'/2'/3'

Tale of the tape :

12'-3473-1:43.6-33
1'-286-1:44.8-34
2'-575-1.44.3-33
3'-862-1:44.4-33
1'-291-1:43.0-34
2'-584-1:42.7-33
3'-874-1:42.9-33

Nice result there Alan with a strong start and a painful finish! :fswink:

Paul, you're absolutely flying at the moment! You rowed this ctc at a quicker pace than the November challenge although it's longer but with the same rest time.

Tried this today on the skierg - my first real effort on the new machine. 2778 M total. I'll do it on the rower later but plan to use the skierg for interval work on lifting days, so thought I would give it a shot. My triceps are toasted.

Very nice early entry Ralf! But why not a second go? Or a third one? Or a fourth, fifth and sixth one? :D :fswink:

First stab:

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M 12:00.0 3,312m 1:48.7 273 1237 30 1:00.0 281m 1:46.7 288 1288 32 2:00.0 548m 1:49.4 267 1216 29 3:00.0 818m 1:50.0 263 1203 27 1:00.0 287m 1:44.5 306 1353 31 2:00.0 559m 1:47.3 283 1273 30 3:00.0 820m 1:49.7 265 1210 28

There's a couple of metres left in the tank, but I rather think if plummy's legs were fresh he'd power past this total.

Great rows so far for so early in the month =D>

As always, the early rows are impressive.
Thanks go to Alan and Dave for a target I felt I could actually achieve for once

Set some funky rests of :30s/2/2:30/1:30/2:30
1:48.6/29
1:49.4/29
1:49.6/29 could feel it in the legs already, and did wonder if I'd complete
1:47.1/29 not sure where that came from. I guess it was only 1min
1:49.0/29 pretty sure I'd finish now. Legs are tired, but mind is ok
1:49.3/29 kept the sr consistent, but managed to screw up the last pull as mistook "4s" on the clock as "1" and stopped after it!

My first one here this month as well. Probably not my last though I feel like it is for now. It was tough, especially the ones longer then one minute :-k :? . Knowing the last three minutes were my last three minutes for today kept me going, but I wasn't to pleased with them. Restscheme was 1-2-2-1-3. Thought the one mintute after the second one minute (still with me?) was a bit short, so perhaps I'll change something there the next time.
As for keeping the spirits aligned, I'm one meter behind Ralf, we stick together.

That's the least fun I've had for some time. 1st 3:00 was the toughest, just seeing the light at the end of the tunnel helped me give more in the second half I think.

Don't know if I'll get another good crack at this one (or if I really want to ;) but I'm going to try to be less nijna in the next year & do the CTCs & even try to post here occasionally !
