October ctc - 500m / 2'r / 1250m / 1'r / 250m, static starts
Hi all,
team Esprit has decided on the October ctc:
500m / 2 minutes rest / 1250m / 1 minute rest / 250m, all reps with static starts
That should be an interesting one, especially the 1 minute rest after the 1250m looks nasty I'm not sure though about the static start for the final 250m. I don't think the flywheel will come to a complete standstill within 1 minute. So I take it the rower is static, not the flywheel.

Strange one. Two minutes rest after 500m and then only 1 min after 1250m?
Perhaps they wanted a 2k challenge in a way that people have not done before?

Having no idea how this month's CTC would feel decided to have a try-out this morning. I can't log it on the CtC page yet, but that shall be possible very soon I think.
I first had a very easy 40 minutes row, after that the challenge. Decided to row both the 500 mtr as the 1250 mtr in a 1:50 pace and then see what I had left for the 250 mtr.
After a better preparation I hope to make a better time this month. The picture shows 4 minutes of rest, but that's I couldn't find a way to leave out the last rest interval in the RowPro session setup. So I finished with a one minute rest as well (but that rest is still continuing now).

Had another go today, 7.02.8, respectively 2.8 faster, 4.9 faster and .2 faster. The two minutes rest after the 500 mtr is ok, so that one could go a bit faster next time, but one minute rest after 1250 mtr is not much. And the flywheel didin't come to a complete standstill, as Peter already thought.

October ctc - 500m / 2'r / 1250m / 1'r / 250m, static starts
Inspired by Fred (dank je wel!) I thought I give it a first try today. So first warming up with a gentle 1k then a 30min row on RowPro with good company (7000m sharp). Then programmed this months challenge and this is how it went:
500m @ 1:50
1250m @ 1:49.8
250m @ 1:40.2
The last interval was a laugh because half way in @ 1:36.x the Erg started jumping/sliding like hell back and forth, and I had to push up at each catch. The wet rubber (maybe due to warm up ) made sounds as if I was a Southern European whistling after a beautiful lady a la Fellini (although I am not a fan of stereotypes I cannot help having them in my head) for each stroke. Couldn't stop laughing but happy to manage to finish at 1:48.7 in total.... more to come later this month (I hope) with a more stable Erg
Hope to see more gents this month as we, to our shame, left two ladies and one lightweight ashore in September!

Well done all
First attempt of the month:
My pace targets (1.45; 1.55; 1.37) were plucked from the air earlier in the day based on, evidently, faulty logic in staggering back from full pace. I think there's more to come in the 250m (but not much).
I also see we've already got boat 1 floated

Well done to all those who have already posted a time.
I'm hoping to have a go at this later in the month. I was wondering about pacing and I figure the overall average should not be too far off current 1k pace (although in my case, I've no idea what that might be). But I think it would be important not to overegg the opening 500m.

I had a go last night in the gym it was helpful that Fred and Tako had posted first
I decided on a conservative approach for a change.
7:13.7-1:48.4-40
500-1:48.0-1:48.0-39
1250-4:35.6-1:50.2-34
250-50.1-1:40.2-50 No power so thrashed around a bit

Nice one Alan
I also had a first go and found the previous FS attempts to be a good guide.
Planned on a 7:05 - 7:10 result.
Wasn't sure whether to blast the 500m, desperately try and hang in for a 1:50 pace on the long piece, and just survive the sprint at the end.
Landed up doing a hard, but not flat out 500m, managed to hold sub 1:50 on the 1250m, and hung on for a 1:32 on the last bit.
6:56.9 - 1:44.2 - 36
500 - 1:39.7 - 1:39.7 - 37
1250 - 4:30.7 - 1:48.2 - 31
250 - 46.4 - 1:32.8 - 41

Great, Paul. My aim is to go sub 7 but I don't think it will be easy.

Thanks Fred - you are nearly there already - judging by your 250m pace I reckon you could easily do the 500m 3-4 secs quicker without compromising the rest of the row.
Good luck.

Wow Paul, smashed it!
And Alan, in front again
Fred, based on your 6k time, you can go MUCH quicker on this.
opted for an 'easy' start, and surprised myself in the 1250 a little.
So hope to scrape some time off in the rest of the month.

Some very strong result early in already, well done everybody!
Paul, you went sub 7 on your first go, well done!
Alan, 7:13 without (I guess) any speed work lately but meter munching for the FTC is very respectable! There is more to come from your side within the second half of the month, once the FTC is over.
Steve, nice first try, but the way you described your row I think this wasn't a full on effort. 7:10 next time?
Fred, two tries in two days, this one seem to be a favourite for you, sub 7 next time I'm sure!
Tako, once you've kicked the italian whistler out of your house sub 7 is on th ecards, I'm sure!
Inspired by all the nice efforts from Free Spirits I decided to have a go myself last night. Based upon my recent 2k and 10k time trials I played with the pace predictor and decided to have this pacing plan:
_500 / 1:40
1250 / 1:47
_250 / 1:37
This would have given me a total time of 6:56. Well, that was the plan and THIS is ow it actually went:
_500 / 1:46.7 / 32 -> completely blew up after 400m, handled down, picked it up again
1250 / 1:48.9 / 30 -> again blew up (after 600m), handled down, picked it up again
_250 / 1:36.6 / 39 -> this one was like planned, being angry about rep 1 and 2 probably helped
Total: 7:07.7 / 1:46.8
So things didn't go like planned at all. Guess I'll have to do some speed work again (which would also be helpful for the IRL mile).

Thanks Alan - more strength than fitness at the moment, but am making steady progress.
Lower DF for this one - 202 - simply don't have the raw power to do high DF - high SPM.
Peter - temporary blip - you have been smashing out great performances almost daily so I am sure you will have another good one with this challenge.
Wolfie - I suspect there is still a lot more to come from you in this challenge.

7:07 with two blow ups is still very impressive Peter. A slightly less ambitious target and no blow ups will likely get you under 7:00 minutes.
I was very impressed with Ian's time (fastest LWT) and I'm not sure I have any chance of bettering that - but will certainly have another go at improving my time.
I quite like the challenge of this one as it helps with the mental demons of a flat out 2k

After all the encouragements (thanks, it helps ) had another go between two footballgames of my sons. Felt stronger then earlier this week, and managed to beat Paul by 0.1 second... I'm sure you'll set that straight Paul. Only realized that when entering my score, wasn't something I had on mind finishing the 250 mtr, pfff.

1250 4:28.8 (was 4:30.2)

Now off to the next footballmatches...

Re: October ctc - 500m / 2'r / 1250m / 1'r / 250m, static starts
Did this with the mile for IRL today. Did the mile first, then a 10 min easy row before the c2ctc. I did not have a lot left to give, the 1250 was 5 sec/500 slower than the mile earlier. 7:20.6

Nice ctc there Chuck! The 1250 look especially painful, I bet they weren't your definition of fun. Well done for seeing this one through, especially with IRL already in your legs!
Athletes row, others just play games

Thanks Peter. I will try this again; not sure I can break 7:00 but that is the goal. It was thoughts of your struggles that pushed me through the 1250 because after a minute I sure wanted to quit.
