Thank you all. Recovery is progressing.
Cold/inflammation is gone.
However, with the weather we have here these days one cannot avoid some snot ;-)

Rowingwise I am far from back. Seem to have lost a lot of muscle and stamina. I must have been in pretty good shape before.
However as neither Chuck nor Felton showed up I felt that I had to try again for the team. Yesterday I failed and finished slowly in 24:45.4 @2:28.6

Today I tried again and cut of 2min 40s from my early entered slow marker. Improving the team's score by the same amount.
19:21.1 @1:56 but as it looks I still have the worst score ;-)

Well done, Tako. I'm sure your progression will continue, just take it easy and everything will work out fine I think.
For the team it's great you cut of almost three minutes.
Get ready for the 1 minute sprint in january ;)

Thanks for the retry Tako, it helped to maintain 8th place in the team competition! However, if anyone feels the need to burn off some christmas calories, today would be a great chance to do that with a simple :^o 5k :fswink:

Bit late with my effort but got it done. Have lost a fair bit of fitness over the last couple of months but reasonably happy with this time. Hopefully can get back into it a bit more in 2018 Image

I decided I'd try to kill two birds with one stone by doing a 5k Eddie Fletcher style warm up prior to having another go at this months CTC. But I found that I got into a better rhythm than I expected on the 5k and managed to negative split the distance, finishing in 20:27.6. My HR at the end was 177 (which I think is pretty much my max HR :shock:), so I decided to abandon any planes to have another go at the CTC. Still a long way short of what I was doing a couple of seasons ago, but a bit better than I expected. I'll try to have a few goes at next month's challenge.

Nice to see you start to get some rhythm back Paul after a tough year on the erg =D> =D>

P.S. I don;t really understand the IRL. Can anyone enter and be associated with the team, or do you have to wait for the season to start?

Everyone can join and compete individually; however, the team competition is at least for most in this thread I guess the main focus. Each team consists of 10 where the 8 best results count for each month.
The teams are set at the beginning of the IRL season (autumn) and the schedule with distances is given. Once the team of ten is set and the season starts it is to my understanding fixed for the season. However, there is no limit on the number of teams, so if there were at least eight more they could form the FS II.

I think you may be able to sign up as a member of Free Spirits (unless membership is closed for the season), but not as a member of the Free Spirits 8x8 team, which is set in stone at the start of each season. I was dropped from the team this year because I couldn't commit to doing the challenge each month, but I can still compare my results against other Free Spirits using the team filter.

I had my first go at this after a 10k warm up at 2:10 pace
Reaching 318m which was pretty fast for me so very happy

Today after work had a go at this. Went more or less as I wanted, 333 meters, a 1:30.1 pace. When I was younger there might have been some room for improvement, but now, I don't know =P~ . A few moments after I was finished it seemed like my breath had gone (right after my finish it was ok), fortunately not too long.

Nice first go , Fred - I have a feeling we are going to be neck and neck again this month!!
I had a first go this evening - was aiming for anything under 1:30 pace, landed up with 339m at 1:28.4, so fairly happy with that for a first attempt.

I had an early go at this yesterday. Managed 314m @ 1:35.2. My back was a bit sore today, so I'm not sure it's a good idea to do this challenge too often.

But I'm trying to row every second day this month and hopefully I'll be able to achieve this without causing any damage.

Nice, Paul - good to see you back(excuse the pun :) .
Have noticed that the adjusted distance for this month is different - the 40-49 HWT are getting an upward adjustment of 18m and us 50-59 fatties are only getting 8m - Are they saying that the older you get the more powerful you are, or are they trying to reverse the past injustices that Tako has suffered :lol: :lol: .

Be careful, Paul (V), I can imagine that a 1 minute sprint can be a bit too much for your back. And Paul G, let those youngsters enjoy it for a change, they can use it. You beat the 1:30 pace quite significant, I hope to get under it as well, but I think not the 1:29 border. Let's see what happens.

I had two goes at this tonight and it really shows how poor I am at getting a) power down/applied or b) actually having any power.
I managed 303m and 305m with increasing the drag from 106 to 128. I actually don't know what my PB is for 1 min (static start)
I seem to get quite a few adjusted metres though.

I also did 2 x 100m for the Lightweight challenge on Facebook and managed 18.8s and 18.7s

Then did a steady 30 minutes with 7324m to finish off. I'm trying to get a few 30 minutes under my belt as I've entered the Starnberg Ergoregatta in Germany in Feb

43Mm metres rowed. Re-setting the bar much lower now. Getting too old and brittle for this malarky

That's weird about the adjustment. It seems to be an obvious mistake as I can't think of anything that would justify such an anomalous approach.

There is a (sort of) similar anomaly in the nonathlon, where the target pace for 30 minutes is faster than the target pace for 6k for MHWTs over age 60. It only happens from age 60 onwards and I think it is probably caused by one or two very strong rowers who have put in exceptional distances for 30 minutes, but have not done a full on 6k. I've pointed out the anomaly on a couple of occasions to the guys who run nonathlon (back when I used to be relatively competitive and therefore got a bit more worked up about my nonathlon scores than I now do), but never got a response.

My view is that such anomalies should be smoothed out, but then again I'm not the person who spends a huge amount of time and effort updating the database and algorithms each year on a voluntary basis, so far be it from me to criticise.

Looks like a simple error to me - they have probably just got the categories transposed when applying the adjustment algorithm - would be nice if it was fixed, but as you say, it is no big deal and I am just appreciative of the fact that someone has gone to the effort of providing the framework for the challenge.
I am trying to focus more on the raw scores, as I am of the (probably vain) belief that with the right approach and commitment I can still improve my PBs.

No reason why you can't improve your PBs Paul. I set my initial PBs in my early 50s, then broke them all in my late 50s and broke a number of them again in my early 60s. As you say, it's a question of approach and commitment.

It gets more difficult as you get older, but you're still young enough to beat most (if not all) of your PBs.

Definitely went sub 1:30 pace just now. 341 meters with a pace of 1:27.9. Very surprised, I could hold on to the pace much longer then normal, maybe this month's CTC is a good training.

Didn't take you long to force me to have another go.

Machine was sliding around all over the place for the first 10-12 secs so couldn't get down to a really low split.
I found out that my days as a decent sprinter are far behind me - I was really just hanging on the last 15 secs.

Respect, Paul ^O^ ^O^ And you needed very little time to put me back in line...
I didn't think I was capable of what I did this morning, so another 7 meters seems like miles for me. But, the duration of the challenge combined with the training done by some more CTC's, let's see what happens. And it's perfect for the team ofcourse :fsbgrin:
