I think we've done ok in november. Let's see how we do this month. Good to see you already have put down a time, Paul. Perhaps I'll give it a try as well the coming days but I will be careful. Hopefully later this month my times will be better...

Well, for a "tentative first go" I think that's already awfully quick Paul, well done! And an SB is an SB, no matter by how little.

Thanks Peter - I found it quite a struggle, I seem to be developing a bit of a mental block for the middle distance stuff.
BTW, the IRL site is now open to enter December scores.

I hadn't paid enough attention to the time you put down, Paul, but I find it horribly fast already. For a mental blocking distance you do terribly well.

Re: Indoor Rowers League 2017 / 2018
Felt quite sick all evening after my Tuesday HM for Crazy Bear so decided to leave them alone for a few days. In'their place I knew my 5k time last weekend was quite weak so I programmed one in for straight after a warm up. Knocked 1 minute and 0.1s off my time to get down to 19:34.2. Nowhere near my Devon Champs 19:10.0 but still a lot healthier on the scoreboard.

Great performances Paul and Plummy. Alan, I'd bite my hand off to be able to do anything close to 19:55 for 5k right now.

Wanted to see whether my knee could stand a cautious 5K. Goal was to start at a 1:59 pace and take one second of every K. Worked out ok, though I still felt my knee a little. Ended out at 19:22.7, whilst my season's best is 18:49.3. I think and hope there will be an improvement later this month.

Pretty good for a cautious effort - 1:52.0 for the last km - can't wait to see what you will do when your knee is better.fkoene wrote: ↑Sat Dec 09, 2017 2:42 pm Wanted to see whether my knee could stand a cautious 5K. Re: Indoor Rowers League 2017 / 2018
I'd echo Paul that this was very fast for a "cautious effort". As I was fighting a cold last week I decided to have a "cautious effort" myself yesterday:
1000 / 2:03.6 / 26
2000 / 2:02.4 / 26
3000 / 2:01.0 / 27
4000 / 1:56.9 / 27
5000 / 1:51.7 / 29
Total: 19:51.5 / 1:59.1
More than a minute off my SB (18:48.5) but I hope to get close to or maybe even below the 19 minute barrier later in the month.

Re: Indoor Rowers League 2017 / 2018
Started out with the same plan as last time, a negative split, every 1 K 1 second faster, but starting with 1:57 instead of 1:59. Worked out ok, ended out about 18 seconds faster then my last one, but still 15 seconds slower then my season's best. With 19:04.1 I'm almost at 19:00 minutes, like Peter I also want to beat that time before the end of the month. Should be possible.
With the team we're number one again halfway the month, it won't last offcourse, but for now it's fun.

Re: Indoor Rowers League 2017 / 2018
Thanks Dave! Had another go tonight and I really hoped to finally go sub 19. Plan was to start 1 second slower than last time‘s average, so at 1:56.5, and then see how I can speed up in every following 1k segment, so a strategy similar to Fred‘s. This is how it went:
Speeding up after every 1k went pretty much to plan. I pushed the fourth k a bit harder as I was still seeing 19:20 as a predicted finish. With 1k to go my average split was down to 1:55.3, so a bit quicker than last time but far away from a pace required to go sub 19 (which would have been 1:54). So it was time to open the hurt box again, a bit early for my liking to be honest (heart rate was already at 178). From now on I was counting down every 250m, concentrating on the split and not letting it get above 1:53. With 500m to go I tried how 1:51 felt (they felt awful by the way), but the predicted finish had come down to 19:10, sometimes 19:09. At this point I remembered Fred‘s time being 19:04 something. To get close to his time 1:51s wouldn‘t be good enough, so the order was sub 1:50 pace for the final 500m. Now counting down every 100m and with the final 200m coming up it was time for some finish sprint. Predicted finish switched to 19:04 with 100m to go and I finished with a time of 19:04 exactly. It seems I beat Fred by a whole 0.1 seconds (sorry Fred ). You will beat this with your next go I‘m sure!

Well done, Peter. Glad to stimulate you, it's all for the team... . You are sure I will beat it next time, I'm not... It should be possible but there might very well be some attempts in which I don't succeed. But, apart from that, respect for the way you finished your row!!

Re: Indoor Rowers League 2017 / 2018
Thanks Fred! Of course it‘s all for the team
Had another go tonight with the hope of finally going sub 19. Plan was to start out around 1:55 pace, so half a second slower than last time‘s average, for the first 2k. Depending on how I felt at this point I‘d probably decide to attack earlier in the session than last time. This is how it went:
Finally managed to go sub 19! First 2k felt ok, so it was time to speed things up a bit. With 1k to go I was down to 1:54 average, meaning I was at 19 mins average. Maybe I can dip below those 19 minutes furthermore? But that required a sub 1:53 pace from now on. It was tough but doable and with 500m to go I started counting down every 100m. Occasional 18:57 showed up as predicted finish now so I was quite sure I‘d stay below 19 minutes. The last 200m were simply counting strokes (and pulling like mad of course). Ended up with 18:55.1, quite happy with an improvement of 8.9 seconds over my last attempt (and 84.4 seconds over my first attempt). Over to you Fred

Congratulations Peter, challenge accepted . I'll keep your strategy in mind. All this internal competition indeed is great for the team. I'll have another go this weekend I think. I recognize the counting down every 100 meters, great how you managed to keep the pace .

Re: Indoor Rowers League 2017 / 2018
Being stimulated by Peter I went for it this morning.
It went well. I had in mind to start with a 1:54 pace and then work to my season's best of about 18:49 but already in the beginning it felt ok and went to a 1:53 pace. That was about what was needed to come to that SB. Managed a slight negative split, though not a second per KM as in earlier sessions, only tens of seconds.
In the last part seeing an alternating pace of 1:52 / 1:53 on my monitor made me confident that I could make it. It helped me through the last part, even went a bit faster in the last 500 meters. Finished at 18:43.
The fact that my sons came to the basement during the last KM to tell me they were going out to play football and later watch El Classico at a friend's place was a bit disturbing but a brief "Even wachten" put them on hold.
Satisfied, still behind Paul, but it was not quite an option to try and beat that.
It's the best time in about five or six seasons I think so I'm happy with it.

Great rows everyone! Adaptive I am 2-3min behind.
Unfortunately a terrible cold/infection knocked me out for several weeks this month.
So thanks to the great base from November I just mad the 101k for the holiday challenge (although still waiting for the snowman ️ to appear on the Meterboard.) and did not fall that many spots on the Meterboard (although Dave and others are coming closer).
For the IRL and the C2CTC I managed to log a time, but will have to improve them by the end of the month unless Felton or calalli put in a score for the IRL. So hopefully a few more days with rest help to get the machinery rolling again.
It is annoying to not being able to row and putting in the meters and scores as one would like to, but putting things in perspective this is peanuts, right!? Thoughts going out to all struggling with real problems. All the best!!
Hopefully steaming full throttle ahead soon again.

Tako, I know that‘s easier said than done, but take it easy and use the holidays to recover and recharge the batteries.
Fred, that was an awesome row! I had a go myself today with a sub 18:50 in sight but bailed out with 1300 m to go.
Thanks Paul, I would have loved to give you a better competition but it just wasn‘t meant to be.
