Paul, at least you are -1.2 cumulative-I am going UP

Even though I am now running at least 4 times a week, I have done precious little rowing this season less than 50k so far

I seem to have lost the love :(

And you had been doing so well! More erging, less running is required! Although, I've read that running is the best exercise for weight loss - so who knows?

Hopefully, you will reverse the trend before too long.

We've had house guests since Wednesday evening and I'm afraid I haven't stuck to the program. [-X So it was with some trepidation that I approached the scales this morning. To my surprise, I've managed to lose weight this week and am now at my lowest weight since Christmas Eve.

Thanks Pal ! You gorge yourself and lose weight -you can go off people you know

Luckily I also lost weight this week by cuttting down on intake and by running 24 miles over 4 days on the Treadmill :D

Hi guys - whilst my rowing is only 1k warm up at the gym each week, I have managed to lose a lot of weight this year. I use an app and record everything. After being sofa-bound in January I have got my cycling going well, though I still try to hit my target of calories each day. Eating less means you lose weight... who'd have known?

Anyhow, here is a picture of me a year apart, though I only started losing weight on 1st Jan this year.

In other news, my cycling progresses. I missed qualification for the World masters cycling by 1m44s on Sunday over 3 hours 30 minutes. :?

We had a second set of house guests this week and all my good habits went out the window. Not surprisingly, it's caught up with me on the scales and I'm nearly back to where I started the year, though still a fair bit down on my post Madchester weight. I'm going to the Ireland vs Austria World Cup qualifying match tomorrow, but I'm planning to get back on the program from Monday onwards.

Another bad week for me, I'm afraid. I haven't been able to get back on track after falling off the rails a couple of weeks ago and was socialising again on Friday and Saturday night. The fact that I've been able to do very little rowing because of ongoing back problems hasn't helped, but that's no excuse. [-X Must try harder!

Paul, I’m sorry to hear that you and Alan are still having difficulties with your weight loss attempts.

Sometimes other people’s words of encouragement and motivation, work, and sometimes they don’t.

Don’t give up, either of you - it’s just a matter of getting yourselves back into the right frame of mind.

It doesn’t have to be all about the rowing either - Paul do your best to keep up the walking and Alan, your running - it’s exercise, so be proud of that, you’re setting an excellent example.

You both know that there are no quick fixes when it comes to losing weight, it takes effort, patience and determination. That’s why, I can never really put into words the happiness I feel for someone ( selfish of me I know ) when I hear they are making good ( doesn’t matter if it’s slow ) progress. It’s ‘ Hands in the air time ‘ and “ Yes!! “.

Paul, I hope that the tummy bug has cleared up and your back hasn’t been too much of a bother. It’s been a few weeks since you had the cortisone injection so do you feel that it has helped at all?

Repeat. Don’t give up, either of you. :)

Congratulations to you Thomas, that's marvellous, you look great. :)

Send some ' Come on lads, you can do it ' vibes towards Paul and Alan. :)

Well done with all your cycling achievements, especially after having to cope with the various setbacks.

It must have been disappointing to only miss qualifying by a squeak - I hope that it will have fired you up with determination, in preparation for next year's attempt. :)

thanks for the words of uncouragement Jill. This week was a bit better. I didn't get back fully into the regime I set a few weeks back, but I greatly reduced my intake of junk and of alcohol. My weight was down just over a kilo on last week.

Today, I did an 8 mile round trip walk to the top of a local hill - around 1300 feet climb in total. Feet a bit sore now, but hopefully I won't develop any other aches and pains. Got a new bed yesterday and hope this might help with lower back problems.

I'll try to be sensible for the next two and a half weeks. Then it's 11 days in Alvor and that will be an interesting challenge!

Good for you Paul. :) You have said on several occasions that you are an ‘ all or nothing ‘ sort of person, so it’s interesting to read that you can lose weight without completely denying yourself alcohol and certain comestibles that you like to classify as junk food.

Even people who belong to slimming clubs are allowed treats in moderation, this works on the theory that the more you are told, or tell yourself, that certain foods/drinks are banned, the more you want or crave them. Diluted temptation, as opposed to the full - blown variety, isn’t quite the same somehow is it …?

Do your best to keep up with the daily walks and at a distance that is comfortable for you. Keep setting a good example. 8) :)

I hope as well that the new bed will help to ease your back problems.

Ignore any words of ‘ uncouragement ‘ and stay positive. :fswink:

Thanks Jill. Where's autocorrect when you need it?

My weight was up slightly this morning despite yesterday's long climb, but I guess I shouldn't weigh myself every day as there are bound to be fluctuations. The good news is that I don't have too many aches and pains this morning, although my lower back is a little bit sore, but nowhere near as bad as it sometimes is. I think I'll try going for another longish walk today (though probably not quite as long and definitely not quite as hilly as yesterday) and I might venture back onto the erg tomorrow if everything feels OK.

Paul, I would certainly try to resist a daily weigh in and if possible stick with your weekly one instead, otherwise, if you do hit a day ( like yesterday ) when natural weight fluctuations give a negative reading, it could lead, depending on your mood, to negative thoughts … And we know the damage that they can do to weight loss morale. #-o :(

Well done again with the walking, glad to hear that you haven’t suffered any real bad effects and if you venture onto the erg, I hope the experience starts to provide you with some of your long lost sense of enjoyment and achievement. :) Be sensible. :)

Thanks Jill. I have a Fitbit that tracks how many steps I take each day, how many calories I burn etc. They set a target of 10,000 steps per day and I try to ensure I always reach this. I also try to reach at least 100,000 steps each week. I was well short of this latter target last week before doing long walks on both Saturday and Sunday.

I probably overdid it a bit yesterday, doing just over 7 miles in 1 hour 47 minutes. This was probably too long and too fast after the previous day's hike and I'm paying the price today. My lower back is very sore and I'm back to doing my 'drunken sailor on shore leave' impression. Hopefully, it will ease out as the day wears on, but I probably won't do any erging today.

She has always supported and encouraged me to lose the weight and has also taken an interest in my rowing activities.

Yesterday, she had to undergo an unpleasant medical procedure and so giving her a guided tour of the forum cheered her up. :)

Because of ongoing health issues, Linda struggles with her weight and is constantly being told that she must put some on - the other side of the coin. :(

Apologies, but we forgot to ask you about your back and hope that it has settled down somewhat. :)

Jill and Linda. :)

It's nice to hear from Linda and it's great that you have such a long lasting friendship. I have only one question - why hadn't you been drinking? I find meeting up with old friends is a prefect excuse to open a bottle of wine (not that I need any excuses  ).

I always find it hard to imagine someone finding it difficult to put on weight, although I know it can be a serious problem for some people. It's an awful shame they haven't developed some system where you could swap weight with someone else, thereby resolving both your problems!

I've found it impossible to get into the frame of mind I was in immediately after Manchester. Not being able (or anyways, not being inclined/motivated enough) to row hasn't helped. I'm trying to exercise moderation and we'll see how that goes. If it doesn't work, I'm going to have to try something else after I get back from Alvor and I'm under instructions [-X to lose weight before Elaine's wedding in December!

I'm seeing the pain specialist again next Wednesday and I think it's likely he will suggest having a second lumbar injection. I'll probably give it a try, but in the meantime I am going to try to summon up the enthusiasm to have a second go at this month's CTC this afternoon.

A big bravo to Thomas...and of course also your cycling progress, really sportive photo...do you also use strava, i am in to it since the logbook supports the direct sync,...it almost works great despite some minor data is not transferred correct, for example ctc intervalls. What weight app do you use? I implementated balance into the flow app...so it looks: from 88kg in february to 84.7 today...not that much...but also little success counts :)
