How has it been going, Alan? Still oscillating?

A pretty good month, except I've been pretty busy, so the rowing has taken a hit. I need to start building that back in to my routine. Also, still cutting, but I need to step up the strength training soon (to start adding some muscle mass) or before long I'll be rowing lightweight!

My current goal is to level out between 168 and 174 pounds (76-79 kg).

Zoot-fantastic progress well done-you are a real inspiration =D> ^O^

I got a wake up call last week when I went for an MOT to my Doc-sky high Blood Pressure-however it is always high when they measure it in the surgery.

I bought a BP machine and have done a week of readings and it is not as low as I would like but at 65 and 2/3rds with a weight of 93kg I will take 132/74 average which is what I measured over the last week. Today after a 6:30 gym session and cool down it was 119/72 !

Anyway as a result of the tests last week, I have cut down on food and coffee intake-which produced a slight loss in weight which is good :D

I am hopeful of a further loss next week too

Just noticed that it's over a month since I last posted an update. Things have been going downhill and my weight recently has been between 105 and 106 kg. #-o [-X

I'm in Alvor for the next week and I hope to do lots of long walks while I'm here (plus some erging, when this pesky cold clears up  ) in order to counteract the excessive amounts of food and alcohol I'm likely to consume. I'll post my weight after I get back and the thought of having to do this might make me behave in a more restrained manner over here. :^o :^o :^o

Anyone know of any good legal fat burners to help burn some extra fat while working out?
This is why Proextender worked for me the best.

I think there are lots of products out there that claim to help burn fat, but I'm not sure there's anything really effective that doesn't have unwelcome side effects.

I'm going to need to do something about my weight. My rowing has been restricted because of lower back problems and lack of exercise has contributed to weight gain, which has made it even more difficult to exercise, etc. When you combine that with bad dietary habits, weight tends to pile on and I'm currently a prime example of what not to do.

I'm currently in Alvor and not really able to do any erging because of a bad cough, but I'm trying to do some walking to counteract all the meals out and excessive alcohol consumption. #-o

My next weigh in is probably going to be depressing, but hopefully will be bad enough to incentivise me to start doing things differently and redevelop some of the good habits I had during 2014 and 2015.

Great weekend at Madchester, but far too much eating and drinking and very little exercise have, not surprisingly, resulted in further weight gain. I've gone back over previous weight loss threads and I'm now back at my highest weight since 31/12/2013! #-o

I'm not just on the slippery slope, I'm gaining momentum. I'll try to do some erging during the week (back permitting) and some long walks. But the main thing I need to tackle is my diet. I find it almost impossible to exercise moderation (particularly in relation to sugary foods), so I'm going to stop eating chocolate, biscuits and crisps until further notice. I'm also going to stay off alcohol from Mondays to Thursdays - I know a complete break would be better, but I need to be realistic about what's achievable and if I make it too difficult, I won't stick at it.

I will post my progress (or lack thereof) every week and will be grateful for any encouragement my wonderful teammates can provide along the way. If I don't make enough progress, I'll consider joining Slimming World, as suggested by Jill. Oh, and I'll look for that book suggested by Tako. What was it called again - Why Diets Don't Work?

Paul, good luck with your weight loss efforts - old habits die hard, but knowing what you should be doing is a good start!

About the alcohol, it's amazing how many (useless) calories are in there :( When I had my main weight loss effort (some 20-odd years ago now) I managed to cut back on my drinking (mainly social, in Dutch beer cafes) by having a mineral water every other round. After a while people get used to your doing that and accept it as normal behaviour.

Ms. Aamodt has a Ted Talk, below if you can view it. I plugged my headphones into my phone and erged while listening to it. Thanks for recommending this way of thinking.

I've listened to the talk and I've read the first couple of chapters of the book. What she says makes a lot of sense. Not sure I'll be able to discipline myself to not step on the scales from one end of the year to the next, but I think I'll buy the book and read the rest of what she has to say.

Re: 2017 Weight Loss Thread

Well, I've managed to stay off chocolate, biscuits, crisps and alcohol since Sunday. I haven't been dieting as such, but just been careful about what I consume rather than how much. Results have been better than expected, but I figure some of that was temporary weight gain after Madchester. My actual weight on Monday was 108.4 (not 108.7 as posted previously) and my weight this morning was 104.7.

Now I know that very rapid weight loss is not sustainable and I don't expect to achieve anything like that next week, but it's a very encouraging start. I haven't been able to row as my back has been acting up, but I have walked a bit each day, albeit not very briskly. Getting a cortisone injection in my spine on Wednesday, which hopefully will improve things.

I'm going out for a meal tonight and will be having a glass or two of wine, but I'll try to be sensible and not overdo it.

Paul V

Hi Paul
Happy to hear that you like the book as well.
Great to read on your last post that you managed to turn the momentum proving that rapid weight gain (due to a great weekend) isn't sustainable either ;-)
Good luck with your back. Hopefully we will see you back on the Erg soon.

Thanks Tako

Tonight is going to be a tester. We're meeting my sister and her husband and there tends to be a lot of alcohol involved when we meet up - pre dinner drinks, wine with the meal, post dinner digestif. I'm planning to take it relatively easy, but totally alcohol free is probably not an option.

Paul, it's good to read that you have made a fresh start. :D =D> You know, when you are in the right frame of mind that you have the will power and determination that's needed to return to a sensible and sustainable weight. You've done it before, so try and use that knowledge as a way of motivating yourself.

No one is expecting you to be a saint - try not to make unrealistic demands of yourself, as in the long run, this can prove to be counter - productive.

Hope that you find the book helpful - a lot of people bookmark their favourite pages and turn to them when they feel that their motivation and resolve are slipping.

Also hope that the cortisone injection will ease the back discomfort - another solid reason for losing weight, it will be good for your back.

Walking is good exercise. Well done. Do you have any friends that you could go walking with, rather than on your own. Most people prefer to have a friend or friends to chat with as they go.

Will be here to cheer you on. =D>

How is everyone else doing? You all seem very quiet.

Thanks Jill. Had a few glasses of wine last night, but also drank lots of water and didn't overeat too much. Watching the Spurs game now and so far I've resisted the temptation to have a drink. It's the last ever game at White Hart Lane so quite an emotional occasion.

Anyway, I managed to stay with the program this week and made further progress, despite being out for a meal with friends last night. I'm now down to my lowest weight this year. Onwards and upwards! Or should that be downwards?

I feel your pain Alan!

I've also put on weight since my last weigh in. #-o I managed to stay off the junk, but I'm afraid I succumbed to the temptation to have a couple of glasses of wine when we had a barbecue on Thursday night. Then I was out with friends on Friday night and I'm afraid it turned into a bit of a session, which left me feeling a bit shook yesterday and not really feeling up to doing my planned return to the erg.

My back is still not great, but I'm told it could take 2 to 3 weeks to settle down after the injection. I'm hoping to do a brief session on the erg this afternoon, but I'm going to go for a walk first and I'll see how I feel after that.
