Did as I was told last night and had another go at the ctc :D Target was simply to beat my current SB of 22:36.8 / 1:53.0. Plan was to start out at 1:54 pace for the first 2k, then 1:53 pace for the next 2k. I knew it would be hard to beat that time so I tried a conservative approach. This is how it went:

1000 / 1:53.9 / 28 / 150
2000 / 1:53.3 / 28 / 167
3000 / 1:53.0 / 28 / 172
4000 / 1:52.7 / 28 / 180
5000 / 1:52.4 / 28 / 185
6000 / 1:50.7 / 29 / 189

Total: 22:32.3 / 1:52.6

Do you know the feeling after a TT that you could have gone a bit faster? Well, not this time! I couldn't have gone a fraction of a second quicker, completely knackered after the row. Things went ok for the first 3k, the 4th k was tough and after the 5th k I was seriously considering to handle down. Heart rate already at 180 with 1k to go and still three tenth away from target pace, not a promising perspective for the next four minutes  I managed to pull occasional 1:52s and brought the pace down to 1:53.1 with 400m to go. At that point it was all or nothing, just counting strokes and focussing on the pace. A really hard piece of work and only a small improvement of 4.5 seconds but nevertheless very happy with it :fswink:
Yet another superb effort, Peter - you really are on a roll.
Near the start of the season I had set myself a goal to get near your SB's but it seems like every time you get on the rower you make my goal look more unrealistic :) :) .

A milestone of sorts for me this morning, with a sb (and by default pb) HM on my own c2 of 1:29:26.9. I increased s/m to 25-27 from 23-26 of previous pieces which seemed pretty comfortable all the way through.

Some handy nonathon points and metres for the team challenge in to the bargain.

Very impressive again Peter, I had a few attempts to row the 6K in a 1:53 pace but couldn't finish them. In the beginning of the month I felt stronger overall, so I think if I wanted to row faster than the time I set for the CTC (and my SB) I had to do it in the beginning of the month.

SB for 30 mins today - not a great distance - 7397m - but am quite pleased with it as I am doing all my sessions of 30 mins and longer rowing strapless on DF of 300, to build a strength base.

Thanks - no, I have taken the wire grille off - if I row outside on a cold day I can get a max DF of about 375 with the grille off.

After a failed attempt on another 30 min SB on Monday I tried the 10k yesterday. Having failed in the 30 min with about half way through but at SB pace I decided to have a more conservative approach on the 10k. Old SB was 39:09.5 / 1:57.4 so the plan was to start it a bit easier at 1:58 pace for the first 2k and then see how I feel and gradually wind it up from there. This is how it went:

_2000 / 1:57.7 / 27
_4000 / 1:57.3 / 27
_6000 / 1:57.2 / 27
_8000 / 1:57.0 / 27
10000 / 1:54.5 / 27

Total: 38:55.9 / 1:56.8

With 2k to go my overall pace had just come down to 1:57.3, so a fraction quicker than old SB pace. I was quite certain that I could hold 1:57 for the final 2k thus securing a new SB, so I started considering to aim at a finishing time sub 39 minutes, meaning I had to bring the pace below 1:57.0. For the next 1k I tried to see more 1:56s than 1:57s on the PM and with the final 1k starting tried to keep the pace between 1:55 and 1:56. It wasn't until the final 400m that I put all in to try and get the projected finish to 38:xx. as I still had my blow up from the day before in mind. So very happy with a new SB by 13.6 seconds. That may not sound like much but I went sub 39, something I hadn't done in the past five years :D

SB for 60 min this morning - once again no great distance but a low(for me) spm on DF 300.
Been trying to work on improving my almost non-existent technique.
Did the first 30mins at 21 SPM - 6938m
Sped up a bit on the 2nd 30 mins - 7272m @ 22 SPM

Total : 14210m @21.5 SPM on DF 300.

Odd timing with your row Paul as I can finally throw my hat in the ring with a new SB also - and also for 60 minutes. There is an FB Lightweights challenge ongoing and this month it is for 60 minutes. My previous SB was 14514m (which ought to be pretty easy to beat - in my head - but in practice I've barely worried it and failed to even complete the hour on most recent attempts).

My nearest was actually on a hotel machine (14400 ish) so I figured some sort of distraction might be a help so for the first time ever I used Rowpro with pace boats. I can't say it was a total help as an anti-virus pop-up appeared after 20 minutes and stayed dead centre of most of the screen throughout the last 40 mins. The last 20 minutes were truly horrible and the last 4~5 were nearly eyes closed just begging for the time to tick down as every fibre of me was screaming to HD. It was real ragged edge sort of stuff and not pretty.
There were a couple of 30 second or so slow downs which did help me regrouping to be honest.

The result was a 98m improvement to 14612m and back into the 14600's for the first time since 2016/17 season where I only managed it once (14682m - so a bit to go to worry that!)

Two very nice hours of power there by Paul and Dave, well done guys!

Paul, I wonder how fast you can go with free rating (and I bet you do, too :D )?

Dave, the description of the row sounds rather painful, so well done for toughing that one out! I guess that's it for you with RowPro? :D

Thanks Peter :fswink: - not sure I'm that aerobically fit yet but the strength base is building nicely - I would guess that with my sweet spot DF (220) I would manage 14500 - 14600m for the hour at about 25 spm, but I will test that out later in the season.

Set another SB this morning - this time for the HM.
Normally I manage quite a pronounced negative split but I started out a bit enthusiastically and had a bit of a power failure in the last 10km    .
Still pleased to break 90 min rowing on 300 DF, and a quicker average split than yesterday's 60 min, albeit at a higher spm.

Time : 1:28.13.0
SPM : 24
DF : 300

Set myself a target of 2.11/500m for a FM this morning. It was going ok until 15km to go when discomfort struck.

Finished with a time of 3:06:18.0, 2:12.4/500m, which is 6 minutes under my SB :D

Very nice FM there Ian, well done! If I’m not mistaken that’s a new PB, not only SB?

Had another go at the hour of power tonight. Old SB was 14864m / 2:01.1 which I was quite happy with in general but it’s always nice to improve, isn’t it? :D Plan was to start at old SB’s pace for the first 10 minutes and then gradually wind it up from there. This is how it went:

10 / 2:00.8 / 27 / 158
20 / 2:00.6 / 26 / 163
30 / 2:00.4 / 26 / 169
40 / 2:00.2 / 27 / 175
50 / 1:59.5 / 26 / 178
60 / 1:56.4 / 27 / 187

Total: 15038m / 1:59.7

YESSSS! Very happy with a new SB by 174m but more importantly with going +15k again, a mark that had been out of reach for me for the past five years. First 40 minutes went to plan, overall pace was at 2:00.5 and the predicted finis was hovering around 14940m. At that point I had to decide whether to be happy with a new SB or maybe try and go for 15k. Of course I chose the latter option :D and increased the pace for the next 10 minutes. No 2:01s allowed from this point onwards. With 10 minutes to go overall pace had come down to 2:00.3. Just three more tenths and I would be in 15k land! Very promising indeed! On the other hand heart rate was up to 178 now and with 10 minutes to go that wasn‘t great news at all! Nevertheless I decided to speed up once again, no 1:58s allowed now and counting every minute. With three minutes to go overall pace had finally come down to that magical 2:00.0 and now it was all in. Pulling 1:54s and 1:50-1:49 for the last minute made me finish well above the 15k mark. Very happy with that as you can imagine (and very tired) :fswink:

Continuing with my base strength training at DF 300 strapless, I set 2 SB's today.

1. 13:00 10000m
Old : 41:35.1 @ 25.6 spm
New : 41:19.4 @ 21.8 spm

2. 17:30 30 min
Old : 7397m @ 26.2 spm
New : 7585m @ 25.2 spm

On the 30 min the grip got very sweaty and my forearms cramped in the last 10 minutes #-o - I reckon I lost a good 50m + as I finished barely out of breath and my legs didn't feel at all fatigued, just could barely hang on to the handle.

Paul, some people would be very happy with producing an SB every day, but you‘re rowing two on one day, very nice! I still can‘t evaluate how much impact on your speed the low spm have. How fast could you go with free rating? Sub40 for the 10k and +7800m for the 30 minutes?

Had a(nother) go at the 30 minutes today. I also tried yesterday when I reckoned given my recent 60 minutes pace of 1:59.7 I should be able to row a 1:54.7 pace for the 30 minutes (Paul‘s law). Well, I failed miserably yesterday after 12 minutes already, albeit at a pace of 1:55.3 at that time.

Old SB is 7741m / 1:55.8 and today I decided to be more careful in the beginning. 1:56 pace for the first 15 minutes instead of chasing my SB right from the start and then see what‘s doable. This is how it went:

_5 / 1:55.9 / 27 / 156
10 / 1:55.7 / 27 / 164
15 / 1:55.6 / 27 / 167
20 / 1:55.0 / 27 / 173
25 / 1:54.9 / 27 / 180
30 / 1:51.5 / 29 / 185

Total: 7840m / 1:54.7

New SB by 69m and hit my target pace of 1:54.7 by the tenth of a second :D First half went by nicely so it was time to speed things up a bit in the next ten minutes. With five minutes to go my overall pace was down to 1:55.4. So a new SB was basically in the bag, but the predicted finish was jumping around the 7800m mark. 7800m is a 1:55.3 pace, so only one more tenth to find, let‘s go! With three minutes to go I was down to 1:55.0. Well, another three tenth down and I‘m at my target pace. Not much time left to go for it but also not much time to suffer  Of course I had to open the hurt box and with the final two minutes it was focussing on pace, breathing, rhythm and technique. The last minute was counting strokes down from 30, 29, ..., 2,1, still not home, two more... done! Very happy with my SB and finally going plus 7800 again :D
Athletes row, others just play games

You are da man Peter - pushing back the years with stellar efforts her there and everywhere. High Congrats.

I tried again for a 6k SB today but my legs called time on it. I got to about 13 mins 30 (10 minutes to go) and threw the towel in. Again annoyingly I managed a 5k (pre cool down) row in 20:36 so there was quite a bit in the tank and then a proper 2k paddle. There's something about 6k at the mo...

Nice Peter, yet another SB!
To answer your question - at the moment I think I could manage around 7800m for the 30 min and 39 min for the 10k.
I am aiming to get low-18 min for the IRL - maybe s bit ambitious but I am progressing quite quickly at the moment - all my PBs for > 2k are at df 210-225 so that is what I will use.
