Always up for a race
Gym this evening after work. Busy as usual for a weekday evening (and Mondays seem to be particularly bad), so having to keep my pieces to 4K maximum to stay within or around the 15 minute rule.
Warm up piece, 4K. Too fast as usual - started at about 1:54. And of course, I'm 1K in and a really big guy sits down next to me, obviously spoiling for a race. Sets up for 1500m and off he goes... rubbish technique, but by sheer size alone he's pulling 1:51s, and looking like he might even manage to keep it around that.
Never one to decline a challenge, I drop my split to 1:46. He tries to respond, but 1:50 seems to be about his limit. I stick at it until he's got maybe 300m left, then open up and show him what sub 1:30 looks like. He doesn't even try for the sprint on seeing that, and hurriedly departs after finishing with about a 1:53 average. I'm down to about 1K by this point, and just ease off a little to the finish with 1:47s. 14:20.6 (1:47.6). Hmm... some "warm-up"!
Little breather and water break, and I decide to try and test my stroke power a little in the second piece - 3K r24. Really don't enjoy this one, but 11:17.3 (1:52.9) is quite okay by my standards, and wasn't maximal. Can feel my forearms tightening up after this one though, so take a little loosener - 3K in 11:24.9 (1:54.1) with the first 2K probably done at about 1:57 pace.
Switched back to 4K again for the next piece and upped the pace a little: 15:04.0 (1:53.0). Another hard 3K: 11:09.3 (1:51.6), and finally a 3K warm down: 12:14.5 (2:02.4). All in all, a decent set of pieces, and didn't feel any effects from Saturday's row.

Nice warmup :)
Reminds me when of last year when I was still going to the gym . I was doing a 8*500 probably @ ~1:34 pace but was really hurting and breathing very heavily .
This overconfident ULTRA-fit crosstrainer saw me breathing very heavily and sat beside me to show me how it's done . So I start another 500 and he does also, he holds on to me for about 200m and then drops down to 1:40's, he stays for the next interval to see if I gave 120% last time and he finds I do the same pace again .
Shock and the smugness falls off his face, making me very happy .
In fairness he did very good, was about 6'2" and going again a 6'6" trained rowed, but I sure as hell wouldn't tell him that :) .
